Professional preventive care
Short answer: Professional scaling removes mineralised calculus that brushing cannot remove. Mounia Schneider adapts the instruments, power and pace to your gums, sensitivity and level of deposits.

Calculus is hardened bacterial plaque. It can accumulate above and below the gum margin and provides a rough surface where new plaque collects. Professional removal supports gum health, makes home cleaning easier and helps manage bad breath caused by deposits or inflammation.
Scaling does not replace daily brushing and interdental cleaning, and it is not a cosmetic whitening treatment. It is part of an individual preventive plan.
Appointments often last about 30–60 minutes, but extensive deposits or periodontal needs may require a different duration or more than one visit.
Sensitivity varies between patients and between areas of the mouth. Mounia uses a progressive approach and adjusts the equipment and pace. Topical or local anaesthetic may be discussed when clinically appropriate.
It would be misleading to promise that every cleaning is completely sensation-free. Tell us about previous discomfort or anxiety when booking. Patients have affectionately described Mounia as having “fairy hands”.
There is no fixed interval for everyone. Many patients attend once or twice a year, while periodontal history, implants, orthodontics or rapid calculus formation may justify closer monitoring.
An indicative appointment costs approximately CHF 140–200, depending on duration and clinical needs. Routine preventive dental care is generally not covered by compulsory Swiss health insurance. Supplementary policies vary; check your contract directly. See our fees guide.

Your interval depends on gum health, previous periodontal disease, implants, smoking, home care and how quickly deposits form.
Many patients tolerate it well, but sensitivity is possible. Technique, instruments and pacing can be adjusted, and anaesthetic options may be discussed when appropriate.
Scaling removes plaque, calculus and selected surface stains. Whitening uses a bleaching agent to lighten the colour of natural teeth. Cleaning is usually recommended before whitening.
When performed appropriately by a trained professional, scaling is designed to remove deposits while preserving tooth surfaces. Temporary sensitivity can occur.
