Fillings, root canals, inlays and crowns in Montreux: indications, comfort, DENTOTAR® costs and Swiss insurance limits.
Short answer: Conservative dentistry aims to preserve your natural tooth whenever its condition allows. It includes fillings, root canal treatment and indirect restorations such as inlays and onlays. The diagnosis and the amount of healthy tooth tissue remaining determine the most appropriate option.

After local anaesthetic when needed, the dentist removes decayed tissue and restores the cavity. A tooth-coloured composite filling can often be placed directly when the size, location and biting load make it suitable.
The depth of decay and its proximity to the dental pulp affect the likelihood of temporary sensitivity or further treatment. Very early non-cavitated lesions may sometimes be stabilised with preventive measures, while an established cavity generally requires restoration.
Root canal treatment may be recommended when the pulp inside a tooth is irreversibly inflamed or infected. The canals are cleaned, disinfected, shaped and filled. The tooth is then restored to recover function and reduce the risk of fracture.
Modern local anaesthesia is intended to keep the procedure comfortable, but it would be misleading to promise that every treatment is completely painless. Temporary tenderness after treatment can occur and should gradually improve. Contact the clinic if pain is severe, swelling develops or symptoms worsen.
An inlay or onlay is a custom-made restoration, often ceramic, bonded into or over part of the tooth. It may strengthen a tooth when too much structure has been lost for a predictable direct filling but a full crown is not required.
A crown covers more of the tooth. The choice depends on cracks, previous restorations, bite forces, appearance and how much sound tissue remains. Each option involves different preparation, laboratory stages, maintenance and cost.
Private dental treatment in Switzerland is described using DENTOTAR®, not TARMED. The total price depends on the tooth, number of surfaces or canals, materials, laboratory work and technical difficulty. Online price ranges cannot replace an examination and individual estimate.
Before complex treatment, ask what the estimate includes: examination, X-rays, reconstruction, root canal stages, temporary restoration, laboratory fees and the final inlay, onlay or crown. Our English fees guide provides further context.
Swiss compulsory health insurance does not generally cover routine dental treatment. Legal exceptions are limited to specific situations. Supplementary dental insurance may contribute according to the individual contract, but there is no universal reimbursement percentage. Check limits, exclusions and prior-authorisation requirements directly with your insurer.
A very early, non-cavitated lesion can sometimes be stabilised with fluoride, diet changes and improved cleaning. Once a physical cavity has formed, a restoration is usually necessary.
Local anaesthesia is used to make treatment comfortable. Temporary sensitivity for a few days can occur, and your dentist will explain what is expected in your situation.
Depending on how much structure has been lost, an appropriate restoration helps reduce fracture risk and restore chewing function.
The dentist assesses cracks, remaining tooth tissue, previous restorations and bite forces. The recommendation can only be made after a clinical examination and any justified imaging.
