Dental cleaning costs in Switzerland in 2026: DENTOTAR® billing, what an invoice may include and when insurance may contribute.

Short answer: The cost of a professional dental cleaning in Switzerland depends on the time required, gum health, any associated examinations and the practice’s tariff-point value. Private dental billing uses DENTOTAR®. A personalised estimate remains the most reliable guide.
Dental care is not billed under TARMED. For private patients, Swiss dentists use the DENTOTAR® tariff structure. Each service is assigned a number of tariff points, which is multiplied by the tariff-point value used by the practice. Materials or additional diagnostic services may be itemised separately.
The length of a cleaning appointment varies according to the amount and location of calculus, gum inflammation, periodontal pockets, implants or restorations, sensitivity and the oral-hygiene guidance required. A general online price cannot replace an estimate tailored to what is clinically needed.
A preventive cleaning and periodontal treatment are not interchangeable. If the examination reveals deeper gum inflammation or periodontal disease, the proposed care, duration and cost may differ from a routine cleaning.
Routine dental care is generally not covered by compulsory health insurance. The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health explains that coverage is limited to the exhaustively defined situations in Articles 17–19a of the Health Care Benefits Ordinance. These include certain serious, unavoidable diseases of the masticatory system, dental treatment linked to another serious disease, or care necessary to treat a serious disease.
Dental treatment following an accident is covered by compulsory health insurance only when no other insurance is responsible. A routine preventive cleaning does not automatically qualify under these exceptions.
A supplementary policy may contribute to preventive dental care, but coverage depends entirely on the contract. The reimbursement percentage, annual ceiling, waiting period, age limits and exclusions vary. If reimbursement matters to your decision, request written confirmation from your insurer before treatment.
Because the appointment length, amount of calculus, gum condition, diagnostic needs and treatment provided are not identical for every patient.
No. Reimbursement depends on the exact terms, limits and exclusions of your policy.
An initial estimate may be possible, but the final amount can depend on the findings during the clinical assessment.
No. DENTOTAR® is the tariff structure used for private dental patients in Switzerland. TARMED concerns medical billing and is not the correct term for routine private dental invoicing.
